14th November 2022, Colombo: Mount Lotus Eye and ENT Hospitals, the newest hospital of its kind in Sri Lanka, is marking World Diabetes Day by conducting a free health camp at the hospital premises in Mount Lavinia on Friday, 18th November 2022.

On World Diabetes Day and in line with the theme of “Access to Diabetes Care”, Mount Lotus Hospitals is emphasizing on the importance of regular eye testing to stay away from various eye complications caused by diabetes and thereby protect one’s vision. The health camp will allow children and elders to get their eyesight and hearing checked by the hospital’s experienced healthcare professionals. Additionally, all elders can undergo tests that will check their blood sugar, blood pressure, and Body Mass Index (BMI). Based on these results, the MLH team will provide them advice on to how to lead a healthier lifestyle and avoid diseases.

Studies have shown that individuals with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing a number of potentially severe health problems. Long-term high blood glucose levels can lead to several serious diseases that can negatively affect the heart and blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, nerves and teeth. Roughly one-third of all people with diabetes suffer from diabetic retinopathy which is caused by chronic hyperglycemia (high blood glucose). It is the most widespread diabetic eye disease and considered a leading cause of vision loss in working adults. Diabetes is also one of the risk factors that lead to cataracts, glaucoma and dry eyes. Patients can get all these tested at the hospital by their well-trained and highly-experienced optometry professionals who use state-of-the-art equipment.

General Manager of Mount Lotus Eye and ENT Hospitals Dr. Saman P. Basnayake commented, “Diabetes is a serious disease that is increasingly becoming a health crisis not only in Sri Lanka but also across the world.
